Thought I ought to post an update. The almost weekly posts stalled due to the day job and the holidays. I've just switched to working on Atlantis DIY full time and there will be more regular posts once I build up a queue.
I'll close with a thought about Product Bay that I heard about a while back from Fabbaloo. The idea is interesting, and it definitely isn't the first (they mentioned Thingiverse, I even had a similar idea before I heard of Thingiverse). The one thing I think most folks will miss is who is the target audience? Luckily, there are plenty of targets.
Thingiverse is focused at the skilled maker. Shapeways and Ponoko have a focus on mass market consumers. Others are high-end products. Atlantis DIY is shooting for the beginner and novice DIYer. Why? I am one and there was a lot of pain getting started.
Hi Bill,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your decision to focus on Atlantis DIY full time! We met at Samurai Noodle a while back. I recently applied to enter the BSEE program at UW (inspired in part by your endeavor), and 3D printing is one of the areas I hope to eventually help in developing new technology for.
Good luck!
